Control of Yellow and Purple Nutsedges (Cyperus esculentusandCyperus rotundus) in Turfgrass with MON-12051

Abstract: Field studies were conducted from 1993 to 1995 to evaluate MON-12051 for turfgrass tolerance and control of yellow and purple nutsedges. The availability of herbicides for selective control of these weeds in turfgrass is limited. A sulfonylurea compound, MON-12051, has recently been developed for selective control of the nutsedges in turfgrass. When MON-12051 was applied at 0.07 to 0.14 kg ai/ha, the injury to Kentucky bluegrass, tall fescue, bermudagrass, and zoysiagrass was slight, with a maximum of 10% inju… Show more

“…Imazaquin caused turf stunting and yellow leaf discoloration followed by stand loss. Imazaquin applied in April at the same rates completely controlled perennial ryegrass (Horgan and Yelverton 1998) and imazaquin applied in July and August at 430 to 560 g/ha injured Kentucky bluegrass 30% (Chism and Bingham 1991;Czarnota and Bingham 1997); those results are similar to ours. Isoxaflutole at all rates applied and mesotrione at 60 g/ha injured both turfgrass species less than 5% 2 WAIT at both locations (data not shown).…”

“…WAIT at SCG 2002, SCG 2003, and TRC 2003 Observed imazaquin injury was more severe on perennial ryegrass than Kentucky bluegrass. In this study, imazaquin injured Kentucky bluegrass to a greater extent when applied twice compared to single applications in previous research (Chism and Bingham 1991;Czarnota and Bingham 1997). Isoxaflutole and mesotrione in two sequential applications of 170 g/ha or less and 280 g/ha injured turfgrass less than 5 and 13%, respectively, 4 WAIT at all locations.…”

“…Halosulfuron has both preemergence (PRE) and POST activity on yellow nutsedge and PRE activity on spiny amaranth (Amaranthus spinosu L.) and cutleaf groundcherry (Physalis angulata L.) (Shrefler et al 1998;Talbert et al 1998). Before halosulfuron, yellow and purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus) control required different herbicides; however, yellow and purple nutsedge are controlled by halosulfuron (Czarnota and Bingham 1997).…”
