Control Strategies for Battery Energy Storage for Wind Farm Dispatching

Abstract: Integrating a battery energy storage system (BESS) with a large wind farm can smooth out the intermittent power from the wind farm. This paper focuses on development of a control strategy for optimal use of the BESS for this purpose. The paper considers a conventional feedback-based control scheme with revisions to incorporate the operating constraints of the BESS, such as state of charge limits, charge/discharge rate, and lifetime. The goal of the control is to have the BESS provide as much smoothing as possi… Show more

“…Capacity firming by providing a power buffer to ensure economic despatch [20], allowing generators to avoid financial penalties on despatch bids [21]. Price arbitrage to take advantage of price difference in the free energy market [18], backup power for emergency or selective islanding [10], and the time shifting of energy which may be used for peak shaving.…”

“…Microgrids, as small-scale power systems, are becoming popular in distribution systems [1]- [3]. The dc nature of renewable energy sources, storage elements, or emerging electronics loads favor a dc Microgrid paradigm to avoid redundant dc-ac-dc conversions [4], [5].…”

“…They are mainly subject to intermittency and randomness due to resource uncertainty. That introduces technical challenges, such as power quality, control and reliability [1]. With the increase of the renewable energies penetration rate, it becomes important to develop methods to evaluate the impact of these resources generation on power system reliability and to manage this power output more efficiently.…”
