Control system for the switched reluctance drive of a flywheel energy‐storage module

Abstract: SUMMARYThis paper presents a novel control system for the operation of a flywheel energy-storage (FES) module used for power peak shaving in high-speed railway substations. A double power converter drives a switched reluctance machine (SRM) along with a flywheel operating in a wide speed range. An innovative controller architecture based on modular microcontrolled boards connected through a CAN network is introduced. Standard switching patterns are modified to reduce iron and semiconductor losses and to improv… Show more

“…SMES is more advantageous in comparison to other energy storage systems as demonstrated in Table 1. 21,[25][26][27][28][29] This system consists of (1) power transformer, (2) voltage source converter (VSC), (3) DC link capacitor, (4) DC-DC chopper, (5) superconducting coil, and (6) bypass switch. Bypass switch reduces energy losses when the coil is on standby and protects the coil when the converter fail to service, cooling system, and main power supply is lost.…”

“…Among the different generator types that could be selected, a switched reluctance linear generator (SRLG) is being used, providing a certain amount of advantages in wave energy generation, such as robustness, low cost and the possibility to escalate the force and maximum stroke [10] [11]. Direct-drive also ensures the possibility of a high performance control for the generator, avoiding the inertia and delays given by hydraulic and pneumatic systems.…”
