Controlled neoclassical tearing mode (NTM) healing by fueling pellets and its impact on electron cyclotron current drive requirements for complete NTM stabilization

Abstract: Controlled partial stabilization of core m/n = 2/1 Neoclassical Tearing Modes (NTMs) by fueling deuterium pellets is reported in DIII-D and KSTAR H-mode plasmas (m/n are the poloidal/toroidal mode numbers). Analyses of DIII-D data exploring possible physics origins show that an explanation is offered by NTM-turbulence multi-scale interaction, triggered by a sudden increase of local gradients near q = 2 caused by the pellet. Pellet injection from the high-field side allows deep fueling which reaches the island … Show more

“…The m / n = 2/1 NTM in this article was observed in the DIII-D stationary hybrid H-mode plasma 34 . The plasma has the major radius R = 173 cm, the minor radius a ~ 60 cm, the toroidal field B T = 1.86 T, the plasma current I p = 1400 kA, and the normalized beta β N ~ 1.39%.…”

“…Secondly, for an MI driven by the neoclassical tearing mode (NTM) 44 , the enhanced turbulent transport into the MI would eventually lead to the saturation at a smaller width or the stabilization 7 , since it can recover the bootstrap current loss 2 when magnetic shear is positive. Indeed, the partial stabilization of an NTM with the pellet injection was observed in the recent DIII-D and KSTAR experiments 34 in which spreading of the density turbulence was regarded as a key mechanism for the stabilization.…”
