Controlled Radical Polymerization of Styrene with Phosphoryl- and (Thiophosphoryl)dithioformates as RAFT Agents

Abstract: Benzyl (diethoxyphosphoryl)dithioformate (1) and benzyl (diethoxythiophosphoryl)dithioformate (2) were studied as RAFT agents in the polymerization of styrene. The reactive intermediates involved in the process were identified by electron spin resonance spectroscopy as the species deriving from the addition of the polymer propagating radical to the chain transfer agent, in agreement with the RAFT mechanism. Both thermally and AIBN-initiated RAFT styrene polymerizations were performed at different temperatures.… Show more

“…For this purpose, both activating substituent Z and leaving group R of the CTA Z-C( S)-S-R should be selected properly. [5][6][7][8][9][10][11] Communication: The capability of three chain-transfer agents, O-alkyl-S-(1-ethoxycarbonyl)ethyl xanthates (CH 3 -CHCO 2 C 2 H 5 )S(C S)OZ 0 , to control the free-radical polymerization of styrene and ethyl acrylate by the MADIX process was examined. The reactivity of the xanthates varied according to the following trend: Z 0 CH 2 CH 3 < CH 2 CF 3 < CH[P(O)(OEt) 2 ]CF 3 .…”
