“…Alternative ZTA materials have also been developed using cerium oxide as the stabilization additive instead of yttria [157][158][159]. AMC became a special ZTA composition consisting of 24 wt.% ZrO 2 (i.e., 17 vol.%) with 1.7 wt.% mixed oxides (Y 2 O 3 , Cr 2 O 3 , and SrO), the balance being Al 2 O 3 (74 wt.%) [160]. Since its introduction in 2000, AMC has become the most popular orthopaedic ceramic for articulation implants used in the world today.…”

“…The metastability of these ZrO 2 -containing materials presents both benefits and risks. Therefore, careful compositional control of the monoclinic content is necessary for enhanced toughness and strength in combination with sufficient hydrothermal resistance, which is seen as a "feature of safety" [160].…”

“…The newest generation of BIOLOX delta ceramic bearings was introduced in 2000 by CeramTec AG (Plochingen, Germany). BIOLOX delta is an aluminamatrix composite (AMC) consisting of 81.6% aluminium oxide, 17% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia particles, and traces (1.4%) of chromium dioxide and strontium crystals engineered to increase material density and reduce grain size (less than 0.8 m compared with the grain size of alumina 1-5 m) [14][15][16]. With these improvements, the risk for crack propagation and component fracture was minimized.…”

“…Despite these treatments to alumina, some problems associated with rim chipping2 and head fracture3 have continued to exist. In the latest development, the introduction of zirconia nano‐particles and other oxides into the alumina matrix (alumina matrix composite, AMC) increased the strength and toughness to levels seen in pure zirconia while preserving stability 4. The key to the improved performance of such materials was the elevated hardness and toughness properties, low surface roughness due to smaller grain sizes and high wettability, which provides better fluid‐film lubrication.…”
