A DNA Origami Pivot Hinge Driven by DNA Intercalators

The DNA origami nanotechnology has been used to construct nanoscale structures whose shapes can be dynamically reconfigured. Here, we propose a DNA origami hinge with a continuous pivot motion controlled by the concentration of DNA intercalators. It consists of two six-helix bundles connected by two gold nanoparticles. We can control the sensitivity and range of pivot motion by using different types of intercalators and their mixture and by varying the distance between cross-linking gold nanoparticles. The pivot motion is reversible and repeatable. A concept of bending nanoactuators is demonstrated by connecting three pivot hinges. The proposed pivot hinge mechanism may be useful in developing nanosensors or actuators that require amplification of the small deformation of DNA duplexes induced by molecular agents.
