Controlling of Grain Size with Different Additives in Tm3+:Y2O3 Transparent Ceramics

Abstract: (Tm 0.01 Y 0.99 ) 2 O 3 transparent ceramics have been fabricated in a vacuum condition using high-purity Y 2 O 3 and Tm 2 O 3 powders as raw materials, and ZrO 2 and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as additives. Effects of ZrO 2 and TEOS on controlling the growth of grain size were investigated to obtain high-opticalquality transparent ceramics. Self-compensation of ZrO 2 at high temperature offers vacancies, which promote the diffusion and densification rate. Meanwhile, the solid solution formed by substitut… Show more

“…There are many studies (technological, spectroscopic, laser emission, etc.) of RE 3+ doped sesquioxides, especially with Nd [13,14], Yb [15,16], Er [17,18], Ho [19,20], Tm [21,22], etc., but up to now no investigations on Sm 3+ in sesquioxide ceramics have been reported. In fact, there are few data on Sm 3+ in sesquioxides, they refer to Y 2 O 3 single crystals [23] and Y 2 O 3 or Lu 2 O 3 nano-phosphors [24,25].…”

“…It has many potential applications [2][3][4], such as windows, domes, amors, scintillators, envelopes and solid state laser hosts in the areas of civilian and defence. Although developments on art and technology for transparent yttria ceramics have been carried out for nearly a half century since the first yttria transparent ceramics [5] was reported by Jorgensen et al, fabrication of highly transparent yttria ceramics [6][7][8][9][10][11][12] is still a challenge.…”
