Controlling radiation degradation of aCMCsolution to optimize the swelling of acrylic acid hydrogel as water and fertilizer carriers

Abstract: A copolymer hydrogel consisting of Polyacrylic Acid (PAAc) combined with an irradiated solution of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC, 1 wt%) was prepared. The focus was on controlling the radiation degradation of CMC by exposing it to different six doses of γ‐irradiation from 0 up to 3 kGy. After the irradiation process, the six CMC solution samples were mixed with 10 vol% of Acrylic Acid (AAc) monomer and re‐irradiated at a dose of 25 kGy to begin the polymerization process. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) wa… Show more

“…AAc was dissolved in deionized water (1% v/v) then was exposed to γ-radiation at 4-kGy irradiation dose to prepare 1% PAAc with molecular weight of 5000. 33,34 2.1.2 | Preparation of PEO-PAAc PEO that was dissolved in deionized water (1% v/v) was used to prepare PEO-PAAc nanogel. Different feed compositions of PEO and PAAc were used for polymerization to prepare PEO-PAAc through γ-radiation technique using γ-rays generated from 60 Co source at dose rate 1.9 kGy/h at room temperature.…”
