Controlling Snow Molds with CIVITAS TURF DEFENSE in Utah

Abstract: Civitas had some efficacy on gray snow mold (T. incarnata) in Salt Lake City under moderate (75-day) snow cover.• Civitas had poor efficacy on speckled snow mold (T.ishikariensis) in Park City where snow cover lasted over 100 days.• Mixing Civitas with Instrata fungicide did not impact disease control but did enhance turf quality and spring greenup when snow melted. “…Equations developed by Van Dyke and Anderson [ 18 ] and given below were used in the determination of relative forage value. Firstly digestible dry matter (DDM), secondly dry matter intake (DMI) was estimated and finally relative feed value (RFV) was predicted.…”

“…However, dollar spot was less severe in year two of the study when nitrogen deficiency should have been more severe. In addition, recent research from Townsend et al (2020) indicted that there was no difference in dollar spot severity on creeping bentgrass fertilized with 0.0, 4.9, or 9.8 kg N ha −1 annually, and only minimal impacts when fertilized with 19.4 kg N ha −1 . It wasn't until 29.3 kg N ha −1 was applied that a significant decrease in dollar spot was observed.…”

“…In this same analysis, Civitas was rated as a 2 (defined as ‘fair to good control in most experiments’) for dollar spot control, while not enough information was available to provide a rating for Zio. In addition, disease suppression using Civitas has often been modest and applying in concert with synthetic fungicides is commonly required to achieve acceptable disease control (Clarke et al., 2020; Koch, 2016; Van Dyke, 2019).…”

“…The impetus for the latter includes reports of reduced pesticide requirements when using Civitas in a disease management program [3][4][5][6][7][8][9]. Having a unique mode of action relative to traditional fungicides, Civitas features a fungicide resistance action committee (FRAC) classification of "not" [10], is OMRI listed (Organic Materials Review Institute, Eugene, OR), and proves useful in organic management programs or where cosmetic pesticide use is prohibited.…”
