Controlling the Chemistry of Nanoclusters: From Atomic Precision to Controlled Assembly

Abstract: Metal nanoclusters have gained prominence in nanomaterials sciences, owing to their atomic precision, structural regularity, and unique chemical composition. Additionally, the ligands stabilizing the clusters provide great opportunities for linking the clusters in higher order dimensions, eventually leading to the formation of a repertoire of nanoarchitectures. This makes the chemistry of atomic clusters worth exploring. In this mini review, we aim to focus on the chemistry of nanoclusters. Firstly, we summari… Show more

“…The classical structure of nanoclusters consists of ligand molecular shells and metal atom cores, in which ligands are usually substances with a strong covalent interaction with metal atoms containing amino, sulfhydryl, phosphorus groups and other substances, such as mercaptan compounds, dendrimers, and polymers. 164 In biomedical applications, nanoclusters have shown many advantages. Small-size nanoclusters show ideal renal clearance, which effectively avoids the accumulation in vivo caused by long-term circulation compared with large-sized nanoparticles, so as to reduce the potential toxic and side effects.…”

“…Post functionalization of the ligands protecting the gold core via standard chemical reaction (click reaction, imine reaction, esterification, Michael reaction) are nowadays wellestablished and enable to control the number of molecules of interest grafted per NCs. [32] This has been achieved to conjugate mono and oligomeric peptides, carbohydrates, oligonucleotide which drastically enhance the sensitivity and selectivity of cellular uptake. [33] Another strategy to introduce the molecule (drugs, targeting agent) to Au NC surface relies on a ligand exchange process exploiting the high surface reactivity of Au NCs.…”
