In the petroleum industry, advances in technology continue to make a great impact on the business environment. Within the last decade, many emerging technologies have transformed the way oil and gas companies manage and optimize their operations. Today it is widely recognized that significant new oil fields are hard to find and aging oil fields are becoming more challenging and costly to operate. Emerging technologies fill a critical need in the fight against relentless production decline and rising operating costs. In this regard, Saudi Aramco is no exception, even though it operates some of the largest oil and gas fields in the world. Aside from its routine production related initiatives, the company has invested a significant sum in new technologies with the goal of maximizing production and minimizing capital investment and operating costs over the long term. This paper will provide an assessment of new technologies that Saudi Aramco Southern Area Production Engineering (SAPED) has been working on over the past several years to meet this objective. Each of the applications discussed has either already yielded or is expected to yield significant benefits in terms of productivity improvement/operational enhancement, data management/reservoir optimization, or safety. A brief description of each technology is presented from a Production Engineering perspective. TX 75083-3836, U.S.A., fax 01-972-952-9435.in Saudi Aramco-Southern Area Production Engineering
