An effective and novel way to evaluate the quality and amount of work done towards Education for Sustainable Development is to examine the conversational topics offered for students in English as a Foreign Language [EFL] textbooks. The considered problem includes educational material presented in EFL university textbooks published in Russia over 2010-2020. The research aims to reveal how much EFL textbooks have changed towards sustainability. Using content analysis of the topics and methodological analysis of exercises presented in EFL textbooks for university students, we revealed three undecided problems: (1) the EFL textbooks published in Russia have not overcome the problem of enriching textbook content with sustainability topics; (2) the topics presented in the analyzed books do not cover the whole range of sustainability issues; (3) the variety of exercises used in EFL textbooks for university students is limited. The obtained results may be used to improve EFL textbooks. The methodology and research approach provided in the paper may be useful for further investigation of textbooks in many other disciplines.

Η παρούσα εργασία αποτελεί μια προσπάθεια προσέγγισης του ψηφιακού εκπαιδευτικού λόγου, δηλαδή της χρήσης της γλώσσας για την πραγμάτωση διδακτικών πρακτικών, οι οποίες πραγματοποιούνται μέσω των ψηφιακών μέσων. Συγκεκριμένα, μελετά την περίπτωση των επιμορφωτικών πρακτικών, που αφορούν την εκπαίδευση εκπαιδευτικών και πραγματώνονται μέσω της λογικής της εξ αποστάσεως εκπαίδευσης και της ηλεκτρονικής μάθησης (e-learning). Έχοντας στον πυρήνα της κοινωνιογλωσσολογικές προσεγγίσεις, αντιμετωπίζει τη γλώσσα ως ένα μέσο κατασκευής των διδακτικών πρακτικών σε πολλαπλά επίπεδα, από αυτό της λεπτομέρειας των ατομικών συνεισφορών και της διεπίδρασης μέχρι και το σύνολο μιας επιμορφωτικής ενότητας (μακροκείμενο). Παράλληλα, η προσέγγιση δίνει έμφαση στον ρόλο των ψηφιακών μέσων, αφενός αναδεικνύοντας τις ιδιαιτερότητές τους και πώς μπορούν αυτές να επηρεάσουν τις διδακτικές πρακτικές αλλά και αντιστρόφως στο πώς τελικά νοηματοδοτούνται τα ψηφιακά μέσα εντός των δεδομένων πρακτικών, ακολουθώντας την κοινωνιοτεχνική προσέγγιση. Η ανάλυση επιχειρεί να ενσωματώσει πολλαπλά νήματα, όπως αυτό των ταυτοτήτων, του ευρύτερου συγκειμενικού πλαισίου, των παιδαγωγικών λόγων και της μαθησιακής οπτικής που υπάρχει. Αξιοποιώντας εργαλεία της ψηφιακής εθνογραφίας, συλλέγονται δεδομένα από την πραγματική διεπίδραση μεταξύ των συμμετεχόντων και επιλέγονται συγκεκριμένες μελέτες περίπτωσης, ώστε να αναδειχθούν οι διαφορετικοί τρόποι κατασκευής των επιμορφωτικών πρακτικών. Η ποιοτική ανάλυση των δεδομένων της εργασίας ανέδειξε πως ο τρόπος με τον οποίο δομήθηκαν οι επιμορφωτικές πρακτικές ακολουθούσε σε επίπεδο μακροκειμένου την οπτική του κοινωνικού κονστρουκτιβισμού. Σε μικρότερο επίπεδο αναδείχθηκε αφενός ο ρόλος των επιμορφωτών, οι οποίοι λειτουργούσαν σε κάποιες περιπτώσεις στον πυρήνα του κονστρουκτιβισμού ως «σκαλωσιά», ενώ σε άλλες ως πάροχοι της γνώσης σε μια πιο παραδοσιακή οπτική για τη μάθηση∙ αφετέρου οι επιμορφούμενοι συνεργάζονταν μεταξύ τους, χτίζοντας ο ένας πάνω στη φωνή του άλλου, δείχνοντας την πορεία συγκατασκευής της γνώσης, ενώ λειτουργούν ενθαρρυντικά προς τους συναδέλφους τους. Τα ψηφιακά μέσα έλαβαν ποικίλες νοηματοδοτήσεις, ανάλογα με το είδος των πρακτικών, με το φόρουμ να λειτουργεί ως χώρος διαπραγμάτευσης ή απλής κατάθεσης αρχείων, το περιβάλλον του κειμενογράφου είτε ως χώρος συνδιαλλαγής των φωνών είτε ως χώρος ατομικής υποστήριξης και το δωμάτιο τηλεδιάσκεψης ως ο χώρος της ολομέλειας που οι επιμορφούμενοι παρουσιάζουν, εκθέτουν την επιχειρηματολογία τους ή διαμοιράζουν την εμπειρία τους σε όλη την κοινότητα. Το συγκειμενικό πλαίσιο, το οποίο αφορά τον θεσμό εντός του οποίου τοποθετείται η επιμόρφωση, φάνηκε να παίζει σημαντικό ρόλο, καθώς καθόρισε σε μεγάλο βαθμό τις επιμορφωτικές πρακτικές. Τέλος, οι ταυτότητες των κοινωνικών πρωταγωνιστών λειτούργησαν ως ένα νήμα που διαμόρφωσε τη συνολική συμπεριφορά τους σε όλα τα επίπεδα, ενώ αναδείχθηκε και μια σειρά αντιστάσεων απέναντι στην επιμόρφωση, λόγω των προϋπαρχουσών τους ταυτοτήτων. Συνολικά, η παρούσα έρευνα εκθέτει έναν νέο τρόπο προσέγγισης των ψηφιακών διδακτικών πρακτικών, η οποία αντιλαμβάνεται τη συνθετότητά τους και την ανάγκη ανάδειξης των ποικίλων παραγόντων που συνδιαλέγονται κατά τη διάρκεια κατασκευής τους. Σε αντίθεση με την υπάρχουσα βιβλιογραφία του πεδίου, επιχειρεί να συνδυάσει τα πολλαπλά επίπεδα ανάλυσης, δίνοντας και τη συνολική εικόνα αλλά και τη λεπτομέρεια, μαζί με την εστίαση στους ποικίλους παράγοντες που ενεργούν εντός των πρακτικών και με ιδιαίτερη έμφαση στον ρόλο των ψηφιακών μέσων.

This article combines a sociocultural model of classroom talk with a linguistically-oriented model (systemic functional linguistics) to explore what characterizes effective asynchronous online discussion in higher education (HE). While the benefits of discussion are commonly accepted in face-to-face learning, engaging students in effective asynchronous discussion can often be 'hit or miss' due in part to the shift to interacting asynchronously. This hybrid mode of spoken-like/written-like communication demands skills which are rarely made explicit, often with the assumption that students (and lecturers) are proficient. The combined framework presented here enabled macro-and micro-understandings of discussion forums through an array of resources in the SFL model and the talk type descriptors to map linguistic features of knowledge constructing talk in an Australian postgraduate HE context. The notion of 'listening' (or attending to others) is proposed as a crucial condition for whether discussion progresses beyond simply 'posting'.
