Conversion of Ag0 into Ag2+ in γ-Irradiated Organic Solid Solutions at 77 K as Studied by ESR

Abstract: Ethanol and 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (MTHF) solutions of silver perchlorate were irradiated with γ-rays at 77 K. Two kinds of silver atoms (Ag0) and a small amount of dimer cations (Ag2+) were formed in both solids immediately after irradiation. On storing at 77 K, both Ag0 species reacted with Ag+ to form Ag2+ in ethanol, while in MTHF only the minor Ag0 species reacted, resulting in less growth of Ag2+ yield than in ethanol. The mechanism for the formation of Ag2+ has been discussed in terms of thermal diffus… Show more

“…In this case, the conversion from Ag 0 to Ag 2 + amounted to about 30% for the sample stored in liquid nitrogen for 5 days. 19 Natural copper has two isotopes, 63 Cu (69%) and 65 Cu (31%), both of which have a nuclear spin of 3/2, and, in free state, have magnetic moments of 2.2233 and 2.3817 nuclear magnetons, respectively. Thus the ESR of Cu 0 exhibits duplicate hyperfine quartets, resulting in an eight-line spectrum.…”

“…This is in contrast to the case of Ag 0 in EtOH and MTHF solutions where ESR spectra are due to the dimer cation, Ag 2 + was clearly observed as well as Ag 0 in γ-irradiated solutions at 77 K with dose as low as 33 kGy. In this case, the conversion from Ag 0 to Ag 2 + amounted to about 30% for the sample stored in liquid nitrogen for 5 days 1 ESR spectra at 73 K of Cu 0 produced in γ-irradiated EtOH (A) and MTHF (B) solutions containing 10 -1 M CuCl.…”

“…As a fundamental research to elucidate the function and effects of metal ions and/or atoms in biological systems, we have been investigating the ESR and optical properties of 1B metal atoms produced radiation-chemically by reducing their mono cations in solid solutions [4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12]. In the series of our previous studies, formation of metal atoms, Cu 0 , Ag 0 and Au 0 in irradiated solid solutions containing their mono cations were evidenced by ESR spectra that exhibited duplicate quartets [10], duplicate doublets [8] and quartet [12], respectively.…”
