Converter used as a battery charger and a motor speed controller in an industrial truck

Abstract: This paper presents a hi-directional power converter used on one hand as a battery charger and on the other hand as a nmotor speed controller. Different possibilities are presented and a comparison of these structums is caried out. In battery charger mode, the power converter has to absorb a sinusoidal current with a unit power factor. Accordinlg to the power range, two possibilities are presented: the isolated CUK converner wtlh a 1.5kW DC motor and a pulse widtlh modulation (P.W.M.)inverter/rectifier to supp… Show more

“…In [4] Cocconi has presented an integrated motor drive / battery charger based induction or brushless DC motor with a set of relays. In [5] the authors have proposed an integrated motor drive / battery charger based on a wound-rotor induction motor. Recently a split-stator winding IPMSM has been proposed for an isolated high-power integrated charger [6].…”

“…3. As can be seen, the excitation in the torque producing (α-β) plane is pulsating, since a part of the excitation is transferred into the non-torque producing (x-y) plane (5). The excitation that is left in α-β plane is not capable of producing a starting torque in the machine; thus the rotor stays at standstill during the charging process.…”

“…However, only a few configurations capable of fast charging incorporating these types of machines have been reported [4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12]. Moreover, most solutions require mechanical locking of the machine's rotor, since a torque gets developed in the machine during the charging mode, leading to low efficiency, increased wear and noise.…”

“…As a rotating field gets developed during the charging process, the machine has to be mechanically locked in order to prevent its movement, which is a severe drawback. An isolated configuration is presented in [9]. It utilizes a three-phase machine with a wound rotor to act as a transformer during the charging process.…”
