“…Tolman and Weisz (1995) found arrest (and prior police contact with or without arrest) to be a significant deterrent to future involvement in intimate partner offending; however, neither study finds a significant relationship between successful prosecution for misdemeanor intimate partner assault and intimate partner violence recidivism. Wooldredge (2007) analyzed the effects of prosecution, jail time, and prison sentences on future violence among felony domestic assault offenders and found that while prosecution and jail time decrease the likelihood of subsequent intimate partner violence, the length of prison terms is unrelated to subsequent intimate partner violence.…”

“…This included family violence recidivism studies with variable case outcomes that assessed the moderating role of incarceration on new partner violence incidents. While incarceration was unrelated to family violence reoffending in some of these studies (Bell et al, 2013; Kingsnorth, 2006; Wooldredge, 2007), incarceration was associated with an increased risk of new family violence among low-risk perpetrators in one study based on data from perpetrators in Connecticut (Williams & Stansfield, 2017). Incarceration was also found to be a strong predictor of domestic violence recidivism compared to perpetrators in alternative community-based treatments (Babcock & Steiner, 1999; Boots et al, 2016).…”

“…The appropriate matching of offender and correctional supervision can also result in the best behavioral outcomes. For instance, Wooldredge (2007) found that felony domestic violence convictions that were sentenced to county jails resulted in lower recidivism at a two year follow-up, however, the effect was not seen for those sentenced to prison. At the initial processing stage, the accurate screening of relatively benign misdemeanant and minor felony defendants can reduce jail crowding, reduce correctional costs, and expedite the length of time to first appearances in court (Baumer, 2007).…”
