Convivendo com Diabetes Mellitus: Experiencias de homens

Abstract

This study aimed to know the perception of men with diabetes mellitus about the chronic complications of the disease and to identify the socioeconomic characteristics of this population. Descriptive research with a qualitative approach, carried out in a Reference Unit in Secondary Care located in Fortaleza-CE, with 23 men with diabetes Mellitus through open sieger. The statements were categorized into two thematic: basic notions about diabetes mellitus; And popular understanding of the complications of diabetes mellitus. The results showed that 30.4% of the interviewees were in the age range of 51 to 60 years, 78.3% were married, 56.5% had less than four years of study, 60.8% self-referred as brown and having a family income between one and two minimum wages, 86.9%. The study showed a profile of men with diabetes similar to those found in the literature, in which an unfavorable socio-demographic situation is observed. In relation to knowledge, it was curious to find that they know in a superficial way their disease and the pharmacological treatment, and they know to recognize even what are the complications of DM.
