Convolutional Neural Network and Optical Flow for the Assessment of Wave and Tide Parameters from Video Analysis (LEUCOTEA): An Innovative Tool for Coastal Monitoring

Abstract: Coastal monitoring is a topic continuously developing, which has been applied using different approaches to assess the meteo-marine features, for example, to contribute to the development of improved management strategies. Among these different approaches, coastal video monitoring coupled with recent machine learning and computer vision techniques has spread widely to assess the meteo-marine features. Video monitoring allows to obtain large spatially and temporally datasets well-distributed along the coasts. T… Show more

“…The height of the groundwater table is an important aspect that strongly influences vegetative health [9,15,[70][71][72]. Many coastal management authorities are currently considering the use of dune vegetation as an ecosustainable means of protecting coastlines against erosional processes triggered by climate change [55,[73][74][75][76][77].…”

“…Despite its potential, the application of machine learning in marine supervision is still nascent. For instance, in the realm of applying machine learning methods to marine regulatory technology, Scardino et al [19] integrated machine learning and computer vision techniques with monitoring cameras to evaluate oceanic meteorological features. Their study involved employing a convolutional neural network (CNN) to categorize tidal phases and storm surges, along with utilizing optical flow techniques to assess wave currents and heights impacting the coastline [19].…”

“…Scardino et al [13] present a new monitoring system called LEUCOTEA that uses geophysical surveys, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and optical flow to automatically obtain tide and storm parameters from video records. The system was developed and tested in the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic coasts of Portugal.…”
