Conyza spp.: From Ugly Duckling to Agriculture's Fittest Swan - Brief Review

Abstract: -Conyza spp. are widely responsible for yield losses in agriculture due to its worldwide occurrence, resistance to herbicides and other traits which turn these species into first grade weeds. Since the 1980's, these species started to be cited on books both related to the ecology and the weed science, being usually classified as ruderals. Occurrence of Conyza in crops shows that these species are highly adaptable due to its recent evolutionary origin and occur in environments prone concomitantly to a moderate … Show more

“…From an agronomic perspective, the genus Conyza Less. is responsible for decreasing soybean yields up to 30% 9 , 10 . The species of this genus are easily found in no-till system, where they became a great issue in the cereal crop production worldwide 3 , 8 .…”

“…In summary, a good chemical horseweed control became arduous 4 , 12 , 13 . Furthermore, because this species is stress-tolerant and strong competitors 10 , 14 , alternative management strategies should be considered in the no-till system. Those strategies based on the species biology/ecology and soil management applied in an integrated manner seem to be promising to reduce the pollution pressure on the environment 8 , 15 , 16 .…”

“…Of the many species belonging to Conyza Less genus, some of them are important weeds that cause economic losses in agriculture due to its worldwide occurrence, resistance to herbicides ans other traids which turn these species into first grade weeds (Bossdorf et al, 2005;Concenço and Concenço, 2016). Among these species, Conyza sumatrensis (Retz.)…”

“…belonging to the botanical Asteraceae family is native to the Americas and now has a cosmopolitan distribution (Shrestha et al, 2014;Bajwa et al, 2016). Hairy fleabane is highly competitive with crops and is among the most problematic weed species to management around the world (Shrestha et al, 2014;Bajwa et al, 2016;Concenço and Concenço, 2016). The interferences caused by one hairy fleabane plant m -2 can reduce the soybean yield up to 36% (Trezzi et al, 2015).…”
