Cooperation In Defense in the Southern Cone: Defense as an Integrating Element in Relations between Brazil and Argentina

Abstract

The paper aims to address the question: What was the role of Defense Cooperation in shaping the relationship between Brazil and Argentina? The analysis started with the hypothesis that Defense Cooperation served as an integral element in the relations between these two countries: Brazil and Argentina, consequently impacting Mercosur as a whole. Methodologically, the research adopted a historical analysis and qualitative approach, employing document analysis techniques. Despite historical conflicts, the 1970s witnessed a significant shift in the relationship between Buenos Aires and Brasilia, with notable collaborative efforts emerging. however, the rapprochement of these states in marked a relevant change in the Southern Cone and it has been possible to evidence up to 1978 in the combined operation “Operação Fraterno”, within navies, to 2004 in the technological cooperation “Projeto Gaúcho”, within armies and to 2010 in the “Projeto kc-390” within air forces. Defense Cooperation played a pivotal role in this process, serving not only military purposes but also as a diplomatic tool, reinforcing friendship bonds. In conclusion, Defense emerges as crucial el- ement for success cooperation and integration, fostering mutual trust camaraderie. Thus, this study confirms the hypothesis that Defense Cooperation is an integral element in the relationship between Brazil and Argentina, with the potential to facilitate regional integration.
