Cooperative Hybrid-ARQ Protocols: Unified Frameworks for Protocol Analysis

Abstract: Cooperative hybrid‐automatic repeat request (HARQ) protocols, which can exploit the spatial and temporal diversities, have been widely studied. The efficiency of cooperative HARQ protocols is higher than that of cooperative protocols because retransmissions are only performed when necessary. We classify cooperative HARQ protocols as three decode‐and‐forward‐based HARQ (DF‐HARQ) protocols and two amplified‐and‐forward‐based HARQ (AF‐HARQ) protocols. To compare these protocols and obtain the optimum parameters, … Show more

“…It might be noticed that the redundancy ρ k has the measure of the number of channel uses per information bit and is equal to the inverse of the kth transmission rate ρ k = 1/R k . In [17] the special case of ρ k ≡ ρ 1 , ∀k has been analyzed while in this paper we assume variable rate (redundancy) transmission.…”

“…This assumption avoids the need of pilots or control signals dedicated to relaying on the source-relay or relay-source links and allows autonomous relay configuration. We propose a practical design for DDF protocols based on HARQ transmission scheme [6] [5]. The source generates a frame to be transmitted to the destination according to the process illustrated in Fig.1.…”

“…We also consider closed-loop transmissions, evaluated according to the system spectral efficiency in which feedback is allowed. Our proposed protocol is taking benefit from rateless codes [5] and Hybrid Automatic Repeat reQuest (HARQ) [6].…”

“…Cooperative ARQ methods aim to exploit the broadcast nature of the wireless channel and decrease the number of retransmissions which translates into better throughput and delay performance [6]- [10]. Broadcast property of the wireless channel enables nodes to listen the transmitted messages from any node in their coverage area.…”
