Coordinated optimization for controlling short circuit current and multi-infeed DC interaction

Abstract: Due to increased penetration of renewable energies, DC links and other emerging technologies, power system operation and planning have to cope with various uncertainties and risks. In order to solve the problems of exceeding short circuit current and multi-infeed DC interaction, a coordinated optimization method is presented in this paper. Firstly, a branch selection strategy is proposed by analyzing the sensitivity relationship between current limiting measures and the impedance matrix. Secondly, the impact o… Show more

“…In addition, several to dozen Ultra-HVDC projects will transmit about 100 GW power to the east of China. Due to the multi-infeed HVDC interaction [82], the control and management of the most complex Ultra-high voltage power system in the world will meet more new challenges. Therefore, it is extremely urgent to do much more research to achieve fast and reliable restoration when the system is facing increasing blackout risks.…”

“…For the first power system operation and reconfiguration related method, power engineers may adopt the following techniques, such as: using higher voltage level, which might reduce the fault current level with equal MVA capacity; performing load shedding and islanding operations when permitted [5], which can separate the system into some smaller subsystems with lower short-circuit level; or applying intelligent switchgear for smart transmission switching under the smart grid environment [4,6], etc.…”

“…In this situation, switching transmission lines, on the one hand, would decrease short circuit current, on the other hand, would stretch the electrical distance between different HVDC inverter stations. As a result, the multi-infeed short-circuit ratio (MISCR) may be increased or decreased under different conditions, which means the stability of power system would be influenced [17]. Therefore, the decision for the optimal parallel loop opening scheme must consider the support ability for HVDCs, which is evaluated by MISCR.…”
