Coordination compounds of norbornadiene with silver tetrafluoroborate

Abstract: Crystalline complexes of norbornadiene with silver tetrafluoroborate have been obtained both from anhydrous and aqueous solution. While both solutions yield complexes of stoichiometry AgBF4•C7H8 and 2AgBF4•3C7H8, those from the aqueous solutions also contain water of crystallization. The infrared spectra show that norbornadiene is similarly complexed in both the anhydrous and hydrated complexes but that the coordination in the 1:1 complex is different from that in the 2:3 complex. The anhydrous and hydrated 1:… Show more

“…56 Such direct evidence indicates that water toluene 1:2 complex 14 might likely present in the oil phase as well; though water toluene 1:1 complex could not be excluded due to the existence of the water phase leading to a saturated water toluene solution. Water ligand interactions with quadricyclane at ambient condition is unlikely due to a saturated rigid structure of quadricyclane 57 , but complex 15 that with isomer form (norbornadiene) would be very likely because norbornadiene could form metal complexes with metal salt even in aqueous solution 58 . The relatively abundant water toluene complex in the oil phase may contribute to the stabilization of norbornadiene via water ligand interactions with both toluene and norbornadiene after the isomerization of quadricyclane.…”
