Abstract: Saudi physicians' knowledge about Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease guidelines was assessed as fair. It is therefore highly recommended to increase physicians' awareness and knowledge about COPD-related guidelines.

“…In COPD, some specific variables, largely described by López-Campos et al [12], are associated with PTG adherence. Some of them are physician-(e.g., knowledge), patient-(e.g., understanding), and/or social-(e.g., costs of medication) related factors [17][18][19][20][21][22][23]. The Tunisian pulmonologists' adherence to the 2017-GOLD PTGs is influenced by the patients' age, SEL, national health insurance coverage, and GOLD groups ( Table 5).…”

“…[ 43 44 ] Many physicians and pulmonologists are, however, unaware of or have poor understanding of and adherence to the GOLD and SICAD recommendations for the management of COPD in many countries including Saudi Arabia. [ 43 45 ] This may be a result of, for example, time constraints or disagreement with the recommendations. [ 43 44 ] It is important to increase the physician's awareness of COPD guidelines to improve COPD management[ 44 ] and decrease morbidity and mortality rates.…”

“…It is clear that the high prevalence of smoking in Saudi Arabia, the low number of chest physicians and poor compliance to the COPD guidelines increase the burden of respiratory diseases such as COPD. [ 2 14 43 44 45 ] Whereas, the factors above should be considered when seeking to improve and optimize health care, knowledge of patient opinions regarding optimizing care would also be very useful. Further studies exploring patient opinions would most likely be very helpful.…”

“…12 The prevalence of COPD among the general population in Saudi Arabia is 4.2%, comparable with the reported prevalence rate of 3.6% in the entire Middle East. 13 Interestingly, in patients in Saudi Arabia, COPD does not progress to end-stage lung disease requiring lung transplantation, which is contrary to worldwide reports in which COPD is the most common cause for lung transplantation. More research is needed to investigate whether some genetic or environmental factors are responsible for such a marked difference.…”
