Abstract: A number of themes associated with coping and resilience in response to trauma were identified. These themes may be translated into strategies to assist in responding constructively to trauma. Such approaches may be used to improve the well-being of re-settled refugees in Australia.

“…The link between faith and resilience was demonstrated in our participants' narratives on numerous occasions while speaking about experiences of loss, illness, and separation from the family-for a long or short time and various reasons. This link has also been shown by several other studies [53][54][55] which underline the positive role of faith in coping with life events and stressors. It was clear from the participants' accounts that faith provided them with a framework of meaning and helped them to make sense of their situation regardless of the size, scale, or level of difficulty they faced in their everyday lives:…”

“…Coping strategies using religious beliefs and upgrading social capital have been identified by these studies (Marlowe, 2011b;Murray, 2010;Khawaja et al, 2008;Schweitzer, Greenslade, & Kagee, 2007). Apart from these efforts, cognitive strategies such as reframing the situation, relying on available resources also help migrants to cope with their difficult situations (Khawaja et al, 2008).…”

Schweitzer et al (2007) described how personal attitudes and beliefs, and comparison with others less fortunate, help South Sudanese migrants cope with pre-and post-migration problems in the Australian context.…”
