“…The focus is on two levels of interactions, namely: (1) The internal handling of problems amongst family members, and (2) the families' way of managing problems outside the boundaries of the family unit, but still influencing the family (McCubbin et al, 1996). The 3D-item, 4 point Likert scale measures the participant's responses to problems instead of how families respond to difficult situations (Richmond & Christensen, 2000 …”

“…From various studies it appears that when one frequently uses avoidance strategies to deal with stressful situations, it leads to adaptation difficulties in both adolescents (Armistead et al, 1990;Kurdek & Sinclair, 1988;Sandler, Tein & West, 1994) and parents (Richmond & Christensen, 2000). Dealing passively with stressful situations could perhaps ease the mind, but cannot be considered a successful strategy for dealing with stressful circumstances.…”

“…Dealing passively with stressful situations could perhaps ease the mind, but cannot be considered a successful strategy for dealing with stressful circumstances. When using the 'reframe' coping strategy, one redefines the stressful situation so that it appears more dealable (McCubbin et al, 1996;Richmond & Christensen, 2000) and as a result one approaches the stressful situation in a more positive manner. Stressful situations, positively redefined and approached positively, affect the degree of control over and the evaluation of the stressful situation associated with divorce, which in turn enhances the adaptation of the children (Sandler, Kim-bae & MacKinnon, 2000).…”

“…Postdivorce psychological adjustment includes managing distress to re-establish a lifestyle as an independent adult with a social support system (Amato, 2000;Hetherington & Kelly, 2002;Richmond & Christensen, 2000;Thoits, 1995). Coping responses used in the presence of distress are facing the problem and avoiding the problem.…”

“…Holahan and Moos (1985) speculated that a short period of cognitive avoidance may be helpful in providing the individual time to garner personal resources in the initial phases of coping in a life crisis. Richmond and Christensen (2000) investigated curvilinear relationships between coping strategies and health outcomes and found the avoidant coping strategy of passive appraisal was effective up to a point, after which the strategy was no longer effective. Richmond and Christensen suggested avoidant coping strategy can be a helpful coping strategy when done in moderation or balanced with use of active coping strategies.…”
