Coping Strategies in Mothers of Children with Intellectual Disabilities Showing Multiple Forms of Challenging Behaviour: Associations with Maternal Mental Health

Abstract: Active-avoidance coping is associated with poorer negative mental health in mothers of children with intellectual disabilities who have average to low levels of problem-focused coping. This is reflective of that noted within a range of populations, highlighting it as a key area for intervention.

“…Furthermore, the findings of the present study also highlighted that avoidance and resignation coping strategies were positively related to high levels of depression, anxiety and stress. These findings were similar to previous studies in other populations [35,36]. A study conducted in Iran found that the majority of infertile women choose to avoid the psychological stress caused by infertility and avoid social activities with family and friends, which means that they were more inclined to adopt maladjustment mechanisms [37].…”

“…Less effective coping strategies include behavioral and mental disengagement to avoid directly dealing with stressful situations [23]. A cross-sectional study including the mothers of children with intellectual disabilities reported that the adoption of problem-coping strategies was associated with higher positive affect, whereas active-avoidance coping was associated with higher negative affect and increased anxiety and depression [26]. However, no prospective study has examined whether various stress-coping orientations can predict depressive symptoms in the caregivers of children with ADHD.…”

“…Total scores of approach and avoidant coping were used in analyses, with higher scores indicating a stronger tendency to use those coping behaviors. The Brief COPE has been shown to demonstrate sufficient internal consistency among samples of parents of children with ASD and DD (Adams et al, 2018;Benson, 2010;Hastings et al, 2005). Cronbach's alphas on the avoidant and approach coping subscales in the current sample were 0.81 and 0.92, respectively.…”
