Copper (II)-aminohydroxamate ternary complexes evidenced by mass spectrometry

Abstract: The formation of both binary and ternary 12-metallacrown-4 complexes of α-aminohydroxamic acids with Cu(II) has been investigated by means of electrospray mass spectrometry, potentiometry and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The formation of a ternary complex composed of phenylalanine and glycine hydroxamic acids was found to be particularly favorable. Among metal used to obtain metallacrowns only Cu(II) was found to be appropriate.

“…The literature reports on the metallacrowns formed by the hydroxamic acids indicate a good correlation between the composition of complexes in solution and that observed in the gas phase by the ESI method. 17 A control experiment performed on the [AD]-NH 2 peptide proves that the metallacrown formation requires the hydroxamate moiety and cannot be considered as a property of the peptide sequence itself.…”

“…15,16 Recently the structures and possible applications of these metallamacrocycles have been exten-sively studied. [17][18][19][20][21][22] As it has been demonstrated, the metallacrowns can be applied in molecular recognition systems and catalyse some organic reactions. 23,24 Their bioactivity has also been demonstrated.…”
