Copper(II)-Mediated Autoxidation of tert-Butylresorcinols

Abstract: Although copper(II)-mediated oxidation of phenols results in oxidative coupling rather than in oxygenation, it was recently reported that naturally occurring 5-alkylresorcinols undergo oxygenation in the presence of copper(II). To explore the generality of this reaction, the copper(II)-mediated autoxidation of 4-tert-butylresorcinol and 4,6-di-tert-butylresorcinol was investigated and was found to result in direct oxygenation at open activated positions and, at the tert-butyl-substituted positions, in oxygenat… Show more

“…The data can be fitted equally well to the Hill equation [Eq. (3)] to afford q = 1.80 (r 2 = 0.98) and a quadratic equation for single-metal binding (r 2 = 0.98), consistent with either a mononuclear oxidation [23] or a cooperative mechanism involving a dinuclear center, [16] or a combination of both pathways.…”

“…(1)]. Attempts to isolate 4 from catalytic reactions were precluded by its instability to Cu in the presence of O 2 27. However, control experiments under N 2 returned a 90 % yield of isolated 4 when 2 was exposed to [Cu(CH 3 CN) 4 ]PF 6 ( 3 ) and H 2 O [Eq.…”
