Copper(i)-based dye-sensitized solar cells with sterically demanding anchoring ligands: bigger is not always better

Abstract: The synthesis and characterization of ((6,6 0 -diphenyl-[2,2 0 -bipyridine]-4,4 0 -diyl)bis(4,1-phenylene)) bis(phosphonic acid), 2, are described. Compound 2 has been incorporated as an anchoring ligand in copper(I)-containing dyes in n-type dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs), combined with 2,2 0 -bipyridine (bpy), 6-methyl-2,2 0 -bipyridine (6-Mebpy), 6,6 0 -dimethyl-2,2 0 -bipyridine (6,6 0 -Me 2 bpy), 4,4 0 -di(4-bromophenyl)-6,6 0 -dimethyl-2,2 0 -bipyridine (3) or 4,4 0 -di(4-bromophenyl)-6,6 0 -diphenyl-… Show more

“…16 Two approaches to access heteroleptic dyes are now successfully used. The rst is the HETPHEN strategy heteroleptic dyes is our 'surface-as-ligand, surface-as-complex' approach [19][20][21][22] which involves a stepwise assembly of heteroleptic metal complex dyes on electrode surfaces and has been used for both copper(I) 22 18 or other holetransporting unit, and Scheme 1b shows a copper(I) sensitizer which is noteworthy for its broad absorption spectrum extending beyond 700 nm; however, DSCs containing this dye gave efficiencies of <0.3% (with respect to 6.55% for N719). uents in the phen metal-binding domain stabilize copper(I) with respect to oxidation by sterically hindering the transformation of tetrahedral copper(I) to square planar copper(II).…”

“…12 We observed 12 that dyes with anchor 1 bleached in the presence of I À /I 3 À electrolyte or iodide ion. We have now investigated these observations further using asymmetrical ancillary ligands 3-6 (Scheme 3) to eliminate possible effects of steric crowding in the copper(I) bis(diimine) coordination sphere when both ligands are 6,6 0 -disubstituted.…”

“…Although use of the 6,6 0 -diphenyl-substituted 1 leads to a broad spectral response between 420 and 630 nm (Fig. 7) 12 On the day of cell fabrication, DSCs containing anchor 2 with ancillary ligands 3-6 achieve overall efficiencies, h, of between 27.9 and 38.4% relative to that of the reference dye N719 set at 100% (Table 3); the efficiencies decrease somewhat over a period of a week, but remain $30% that of N719 set at 100%. In contrast, use of the more sterically demanding anchor 1 results in relative efficiencies of #11.0%.…”
