“…The results reveal that short-duration droughts (6 months or less) are more frequent and severe in the northwest and the north along the Caspian plains while the longer-duration droughts (more than 6 months) are more frequent and severe in the south, southeast and southwest. Overall, the northwest region of Iran is found most susceptible to droughts in term of S, P and D. Droughts in Iran has been characterized with different indices in a large number of studies (Moradi et al, 2011;Tajbakhsh et al, 2015;Darand and Sohrabi, 2018;Nabaei et al, 2019). Nabaei et al (2019) reported shortduration (2 and 3 months) severe and extreme droughts are more frequent in the north.…”

“…The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 5th Assessment Report, Small Islands Chapter, noted that there are advances at the regional scale rather than country specific and stated that there is a "need to acknowledge the heterogeneity and complexity of small island states and territories" [2]. In the management of droughts the assessment of spatial and temporal variability is important [3]. This assessment maybe used to create a drought baseline that describes the nature of the historical droughts' frequency of occurrence, and the temporal and spatial patterns.…”

“…Drought has a critical impact on water resource-dependent sectors, such as agriculture, raising concerns about the capacity to meet water and food demands [7].Drought is classified into four types-meteorological, hydrological, agricultural, and ocioeconomic [8][9][10]. Meteorological drought is defined by lack of precipitation [11][12][13][14]. Hydrological drought refers to persistently decreasing discharge volume in streams and reservoirs over a period of months or years [15][16][17].…”
