Copula-based measurement of interdependence for discrete distributions

Abstract: We focus on a question that has been long addressed in economics, namely, of one distribution being better than another according to a normative criterion. Our criterion distinguishes between interdependence and behaviour in the margins. Many economics contexts concern interdependence only e.g. complementarities in production function, intergenerational mobility, social gradient in health. We compare bivariate discrete distributions and measure interdependence via a most general measure, namely, a copula (Schw… Show more

“…Correlation analysis is, however, limited to normal distributions and variations thereof. Assuming that not all distributions are lognormal, and the dependence in the tails of the distribution where the impacts are strong may be more important, interdependencies may instead be modeled by copulas (Kobus and Kurek 2018). The modeling of interdependent variables was, however, not included in the present study.…”

“…7 See Decancq (2014) and García-Gómez et al ( 2021) for a discussion of the problem of ties (i.e., how to assign the rank when two or more individuals obtain the same achievement) from a practical perspective. Kobus and Kurek (2018) present a theoretical discussion.…”

“…Copula‐based methods effectively represent the dependence structure between two or more variables and offer an exciting approach to social science (Atkinson, 2011; Bonhomme and Robin, 2009). Kobus and Kurek (2018) discussed the drawbacks of conventional measures of interdependence based on correlation beyond Gaussian settings.…”
