Coral disease at Mansuar Island, Raja Ampat, Indonesia

Abstract: Coral reef has been facing rapid destruction nowadays. Raja Ampat Islands in Papua has one of the highest coral reef diversities and is located within the Coral Triangle area. The coral condition in Raja Ampat is still categorized as healthy. However, it started to show some of the habitat degrading signs. Coral disease is one of the main causes in coral reef ecosystem decline. This study aims to measure the level of coral disease based on coral disease category prevalence observation at Mansuar Island in Raja… Show more

“…The number of tourists to the Raja Ampat islands continues to rise, which may negatively impact the coastal ecosystem ( King, 2017 ; Papilaya, Boli & Nikijuluw, 2019 ; Maas et al, 2020 ; Purwanto et al, 2021 ). Coral bleaching and disease have also been observed because of environmental stresses such as seawater temperature fluctuation, decreasing salinity, high sedimentation, and turbidity ( Ampou et al, 2020 ; Johan et al, 2020 ; Subhan et al, 2020 ). Identifying the drivers of benthic community diversity in marine habitats is crucial for gaining deeper insights into how the benthic communities may shift.…”

“…Two major drivers of these declines are heat-induced bleaching—loss of endosymbiotic algae (Brown, 1997)—and disease (Harvell et al, 2007). Although isolated heat-induced bleaching (Johnston et al, 2019; McClanahan et al, 2007; Winter et al, 1998) and disease are common (Richardson et al, 1998; Subhan et al, 2020), these events have also been frequently observed in close spatial and temporal associations (Brandt & McManus, 2009; Burke et al, 2023; Harvell et al, 2001; Howells et al, 2020). In many cases, coral disease follows bleaching (Croquer & Weil, 2009), with extensive disease-related mortality often reported in the weeks to months after heat stress (Jones et al, 2021; Miller et al, 2009; Miller et al, 2006).…”
