Cordyceps militaris extracts and cordycepin ameliorate type 2 diabetes mellitus by modulating the gut microbiota and metabolites

Abstract: Introduction:Cordyceps militaris, which has many potential medicinal properties, has rarely been reported to alleviate type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).Methods: The effects of C. militaris extracts (CE) and cordycepin (CCS) on high-fat diet and streptozotocin (STZ) induced T2DM mice were analysed by gut microbiome and metabolomics methods in this study. Results: The results demonstrated that glucose and lipid metabolism parameters, oxidative stress biomarkers and inflammation cytokines were down-regulated in the… Show more

“…The activity of cordycepin extracted from C. militaris was described in a study on mice, which demonstrated its influence on type 2 diabetes, improving the abundance of Firmicutes/Bacteroides that promote the growth of beneficial bacteria by regulation of the intestinal flora, enhancing the metabolites and metabolic pathways associated with the diabetes type 2 modifications [7].…”

“…mushrooms in search of a natural product with high medicinal value. The study of C. mushrooms has shown they have anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, hypoglycemic, and anti-tumoral effects [7][8][9][10]. It has also been shown that they can help improve the gut microbiota [11][12][13].…”

“…Previous studies have demonstrated that CM powder exhibited an ability to regulate the immune system in humans [13] and protect mice from triptolide-induced acute hepatotoxicity [12]. Recent studies also highlighted the potential of active constituents from CM to ameliorate type 2 diabetes mellitus, obesity, and neurodegenerative diseases, through modulating gut microbiota and improving intestinal mucosal structure damage [14][15][16]. However, multiple biocomponents of CM may have potential synergistic effects, and it remains unclear whether CM can alleviate UC by regulating the intestinal mucosal barrier and gut microbiota.…”
