Corneal Coloboma, Aphakia and Retinal Neovascularization with Anterior Segment Dysgenesis (Peters’ Anomaly)

Abstract: An infant with bilateral Peters’ Anomaly, with corneal opacification in the right eye and an opacification with an axial defect in the left also had an associated hydrocephalus and cardiac anomalies that proved fatal; histopathology of the right eye showed retinal neovascularization in addition to findings consistent with a diagnosis of Peters’ Anomaly; in the left eye, pathologic findings were suggestive of a corneal coloboma associated with aphakia.

“…Interestingly, the only other report of a case comparable to this one was described in 1996 in a prematurely born child with Peters anomaly and was reported as a corneal coloboma. 9 It is at present unclear how our findings fit in the classification of congenital corneal opacities recently proposed by Nischal, 10 dividing the congenital anomalies into primary (all developmental) and secondary (developmental or acquired) corneal disease. Under the developmental anomalies of the anterior segment in secondary corneal disease the kerato-irido-lenticular dysgenesis is placed.…”

“…Gunderson et al reported on a patient with congenital aphakia and Peters anomaly with corneal coloboma and retinal neovascularization. 22 Each of these eyes lacked lens remnants on microscopic examination and were all felt to represent primary aphakia.…”

“…19 Congenital primary aphakia in the setting of Peters anomaly has been described. [20][21][22][23] Herein we present 2 patients with clinical and histopathological evidence of secondary congenital aphakia in association with Peters anomaly.…”

“…Eye colobomas are congenital malformations of the eye secondary to an abnormality of closure of the embryonic fissure. All eye structures may be affected [1]. Chorio-retinal coloboma is an abnormality of choroid and retinal development.…”
