Corneal Wound Healing and Nerve Morphology after Excimer Laser In Situ Keratomileusis in Human Eyes

Abstract: BACKGROUND; Our aim was to describe wound healing and nerve regeneration in the human cornea after excimer laser in situ keratomileusis. METHODS: Excimer laser in situ keratomileusis was done in three human eyes 8 days, 54 days, and 4 months prior to enucleation. Acetylcholinesterase reaction was used to histochemically demonstrate the corneal nerves. Immunohistochemical methods were used to demonstrate the following wound healing proteins: cellular fibronectin, tenascin, transforming growth factor-ß… Show more

“…Then the stromal nerve bundle forms branches that run perpendicularly to cross Bowman's layer and form the subbasal nerve plexus between the basal epithelium and Bowman's layer. [71][72][73] The ablation zone, 74,75 diameter of lenticule, 72 flap size, 75 and the degree of the refractive error 75,76 affect the amount of nerve loss. 72…”

“…However, as the nerve fibres become better organised, sensitivity returns to normal levels. 150,128,147 In recent years, alternative methods to conventional LASIK have developed with the advent of the femtosecond laser for refractive surgery. When used in place of the micro-keratome for flap creation (i.e.…”

“…Cruzat et al studied two patients with HZO over time, and demonstrated nerve regeneration by IVCM and partial recovery of corneal sensation in one patient 5 years after the initial episode of HZO [12]. In post-LASIK eyes, various studies have reported the occurrence of nerve regeneration ranging from 54 days to 6 months after LASIK [14][15][16].…”
