Coronary calcification and its relation to extracoronary atherosclerosis in asymptomatic hypercholesterolemic men. The PCV METRA Group.

Abstract: The close relation between coronary calcium and extracoronary plaques suggests that echography of extracoronary vessels could aid in the screening of coronary atherosclerosis in high-risk, asymptomatic individuals.

“…24,28 LDL (dϭ1.019 to 1.063 g/mL) was isolated by sequential ultracentrifugation in a Beckman L90 ultracentrifuge (Beckman Instruments Inc) according to a procedure previously described in detail. 24 Collected LDL was dialyzed for 24 hours at ϩ4°C against four changes of 100 vol 10 mmol/L Tris-HCl buffer, pH 7.4, containing 1 mmol/L EDTA, and was stored at ϩ4°C in the dark.…”

“…This finding is probably attributable to the examination of several territories, including vascular areas more susceptible to disease such as the iliofemoral arteries, which were not explored in earlier studies. Other studies that investigated multiple vascular sites included only men with at least 1 risk factor, 21 examined participants at higher risk, 22 or explored fewer territories. 23 An innovation of PESA is the early detection of atherosclerosis in other vascular territories even in the absence of CAC.…”

“…Blood pressure at follow-up and presence of atherosclerosis The age-adjusted relative risk of advanced atherosclerosis compared with the reference group (75-84 mm Hg) was [1][2][3][4][5][6] (0-8-3-0) for the lowest blood pressure category (< 75 mm Hg), [1][2][3][4][5][6][7] (0-9-3-1) for 85-94 mm Hg, and 3-7 (1-6-8-7) for more than 95 mm Hg. The association was also examined among women on antihypertensive medication at follow-up (n = 203).…”
