Coronary Heart Disease in the Middle East and North Africa: Current Status and Future Goals

Abstract: Ischemic heart disease is now the leading cause of death in the region. Age at presentation with myocardial infarction and acute coronary syndrome appears to be significantly younger than global averages. Increased rates of all major risk factors including diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, smoking, obesity, and sedentary lifestyle have been noted. Specifically, significant changes to dietary habits and growing epidemic of use of alternative tobacco products are noted. This review article highlights the g… Show more

“…However, the results in AMI were inconsistent with UAP, and we speculated that there might be 3 reasons: first, high smoking rate in patients with AMI, which is a high risk factor for AMI. [ 31 , 32 ] In this study, the percentage of smokers in AMI is much higher than that of UAP and CTR. Second, CAD is a slow developing disease under the combined action of many factors, involving a variety of pathological processes, and the expression level of a single gene may be changed by other pathological factors.…”

“…The mean age for developing CAD in the Middle East is 10 years younger than the mean age of their western counterparts [2][3][4][5][6][7][8]. The prevalence of CAD risk factors among Saudi patients with established CAD is alarming; however, many of these are modifiable risk factors [9][10][11]. In Saudi Arabia, despite the widespread availability of hospitals with a catheterization laboratory, there are fewer patients treated with a primary percutaneous intervention [12].…”

“…The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study released that cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) as one of the most prominent noncommunicable diseases (NCD) was the leading global cause of death since 1980 and a leading cause of disease burden in the Eastern Mediterranean Region [1]. CVDs are predisposed by various risk factors such as increased low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), decreased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), high blood triglyceride concentrations (TG), high blood pressure (BP), hyperglycemia, high body mass index (BMI), abdominal obesity and high in ammatory state [1][2][3][4]. When the impairment coincides with risk factors, it leads to a dramatic increase in the incidence of CVDs and associated morbidity and mortality [5,6].…”
