Coronary vascular volume remodelling in rainbow troutOncorhynchus mykiss

Abstract: The 34% increase in relative ventricular mass (Mrv) resulting from chronic anaemia (induced by an intraperitoneal injection of phenylhydrazine hydrochloride) was accompanied by a 117% increase in coronary vascular volume of diploid rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss. Coronary vascular volume of normocythemic triploid fish was similar to that of normocythemic diploid fish despite a larger Mrv. These observations, in combination with previous studies, suggest that the vascularity of compact myocardium in O. mykis… Show more

“…a,b) induced by aplasia of the septum transversum . For instance, fish experiencing anaemia display increased heart mass most likely as a result of increased cardiac workload (Simonot & Farrell , ; Powell, Burke & Dahle , ). Reduced cardiac performance likely explains high mortality rates in stressed fish with heart deformities including hypoplastic or aplastic septum transversum (Brocklebank & Raverty ), demonstrating the potential severity of malformed septum transversum .…”

“…To compensate for this, hypoxia-inducible factor 1a (HIF-1a), among others (Terova et al 2008), serves to regulate erythropoietin transcription, which increases erythrocyte formation . Additionally, cardiac output will likely be increased as a result of increase in stroke volume and cardiac frequency (Simonot and Farrell 2009). This itself will lead to a structural remodelling of the heart reported (McClelland et al 2005;Farrell 2007, 2009).…”

“…Haemolytic anaemia is the result of haemolysis or reduced lifespan of circulating erythrocytes and commonly attributed to chemical intoxication that interferes with haemoglobin synthesis or elicits redox reactions resulting in erythrocytic damage (Beutler, 2005). Haemolytic anaemia has been induced using phenylhydrazine in a number of fish species (Cameron & Wolschlag, 1969; Jones, 1971; Smith et al , 1971; Simonot & Farrell, 2007, 2009). Phenylhydrazine reacts with haemoglobin forming bioactive radicals with an un‐bound oxygen being consumed in the reaction (Shetler & Hill, 1985).…”

“…With either type of anaemia (haemorrhagic or haemolytic), the result is a reduction in the oxygen‐carrying capacity of the blood that stimulates erythropoietin transcription through hypoxia‐inducible factor 1 α (HIF‐1 α ). Increases in cardiac output occur, driven by increases in stroke volume and cardiac frequency and aided by cardiac hypertrophy resulting from structural remodelling of the heart at least in phenylhydrazine‐induced anaemia in rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum 1792), (Simonot & Farrell, 2007, 2009) and cod Gadus morhua L. 1758 (Powell et al , 2011). Bottom dwelling fishes such as pleuronectiformes have been observed with low haematocrits, although the mechanisms by which the fishes may compensate for these effects are unknown.…”
