Correcting scan‐to‐scan response variability for a radiochromic film‐based reference dosimetry system

Abstract: In the absence of measures to deal with the response irregularities, each factor the authors investigated could lead to dose uncertainty >2%. Those factors related to the film-to-light source distance could be particularly impactful since the authors observed many instances where the curl of film samples had the potential to cause dose uncertainty in excess of 5%. Two expedients will eliminate the uncertainties: a transparent sheet (preferably glass) placed over the scanned film keeps the film-to-light source … Show more

“…The asymmetry in the measured dose profiles, especially in the horizontal direction, was not seen in the MC simulated dose profiles. This asymmetry may be due to a bending of the Gafchromic EBT3 films, as discussed by Lewis and Devic [15], which could lead to errors and asymmetry in the dose measurements. Considering the observed steep lateral dose gradients, position A is not suitable for cell irradiation.…”

“…The resulting scans were then corrected for any interscan variations based on the control film's result compared to the average result in a technique similar to that used by Lewis and Devic. 23 The dose delivered to each experimental film was calculated by the creation of a calibration dose-response curve for the Gafchromic EBT3 film by using standard x-ray fields of 10 × 10 cm at given applied dose levels. This was performed due to the known nonlinear relationship of net optical density to dose-response of the Gafchromic EBT3 film when scanned using an Epson10000XL desktop scanner.…”
