Correction of incomplete cleft palate by u-shaped flap palatoplasty

Abstract: The designed flap allows covering of sutured nasal mucosa and palatal muscles with a healthy unsutured oral mucosa and elongates the soft palate. Thus, there was no incidence of post-operative fistula and no need for further pharyngoplasties.

“…Regarding the palatal clefts, the complete unilateral had the 2-flap palatoplasty [ Figure 3], two of the incomplete clefts (soft palate) had a V-Y push back palatoplasty as described by Kilner and Wardill, [9] while the remaining two incomplete clefts had the Von Langenbeck palatoplasty. Sale [10] in 2010 reported the successful use of u-shaped flaps for the incomplete clefts in 34 patients. Our experience compares favorably with the Bangladesh study.…”

“…Successful prosthetic reconstruction of an acquired or congenital maxillary defect is a challenging procedure that requires multidisciplinary expertise to achieve acceptable functional and aesthetic outcomes (Agarwal, 2009). Today, advanced surgical techniques allow cleft palate with or without cleft lip and maxillary defect to be restored with a high level of satisfaction (Mukohyame et al, 2005; Saleh, 2010; Isik et al, 2011). However, around 70 years ago, it was difficult to perform palatoplasty of a large defect where rehabilitation with graft was needed.…”
