Correlated Electrical and Optical Measurements of Exploding Wires

Abstract: Description is given of a high-resolution streak camera and of an experimental method whereby streak-camera records and electrical measurements of exploding wires may be accurately correlated in time. Composite data together with derived values of resistance, power, and energy are given for 4 and 5 mil Cu wires at several voltages. These data are compared with the experimental and theoretical results of other workers. The transfer of energy from electrical to fluid-mechanical form is discussed as are problems … Show more

“…A similar conclusion was made by the authors of the review [3]. At the same time, Bennett et al [100] arrived at the conclusion that the core is shunted "due to a discharge in released gases initially adsorbed by the wire." The same point of view was expressed by Sinars et al [151] who stated that "a very likely mechanism of corona formation is shunting of the wire by a highly conductive plasma channel, which occurs during the breakdown of gases desorbed by the metal."…”

“…Smith's8 solutions are based upon a small perturbation approximation and, for the "fast" explosions discussed here, Bennett et al 9 have shown that the radial motion is small while the wire is in its solid state. Because of the complex nature of wire explosions and because the analysis presented in this paper deals only with the solid state, it is not anticipated that this will lead to a complete description of striative phenomena, but it may provide some insight into one of the mechanisms.…”

“…Measuring and analyzing the voltage and current waveforms during the exploding wire process is always the essential step to the exploding wire research. The voltage and current waveforms were used to calculate the time-dependent resistance, instantaneous power, and energy absorbed by the wire [2]. The current waveform was use to indicate phase change of the wire [3].…”
