Correlates Among Nocturnal Agitation, Sleep, and Urinary Incontinence in Dementia

Abstract: Family caregivers of elders with dementia often face the challenging behaviors of nighttime agitation, sleep disturbances, and urinary incontinence. To date, no study has examined the interrelationships of these behaviors in community-dwelling persons. This single group, descriptive study employs wireless body sensors to objectively collect data on nighttime agitation, sleep, and urinary incontinence in patients with dementia in their homes over a 5- to 7-day period. The aims are to (1) examine the feasibility… Show more

“…This may relate to the comorbid conditions encountered in older age that alter neural awareness, arousal mechanisms and cortical control and lie on the causal pathway of nocturnal incontinence. Insensible urine leakage and nocturnal enuresis have not been well described in the elderly, aside from an association with impaired cognitive function in conditions such as dementia 20 . Containment pad use at night did not differ by nocturia status.…”

A quarter of in-patients with nocturia who did not report nocturnal incontinence, wore pads at night.…”

“…Regarding scientific evidence, one study ( 58 ) was published in 2010, the others ( N = 4) 2015 or later. Furthermore, three were case studies ( 58 , 59 , 86 ), one a feasibility study ( 60 ), and one RCT ( 13 ). Looking at the applications, two ( 59 , 62 ) technology applications were based on lighting, and three were a sort of pillow people can use.…”

“…Studies concluded that their systems were feasible for monitoring people with dementia at a rehabilitation institute (114) and critically ill patients in the ICU. (115) The challenges were Wi-Fi connections (112), trouble-shooting for the installation via the phone, (117) and that people with dementia can take off the sensors when agitated. (118)…”
