Correlates of Any Condom Use Among Russian Narcology Patients Reporting Recent Unprotected Sex

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to assess whether HIV/sexually transmitted infection (STI) risk factors: risky sex (multiple sex partners and sex trade involvement), past HIV or STI diagnosis and substance use (at risk drinking and injection drug use) are associated with the outcome any condom use in the past 6 months among Russian narcology hospital patients. “…Estimates of HIV prevalence among PWID vary widely throughout the region. A total of 79 sources reported HIV prevalence estimates (some multiple), of which 67 reported unique HIV prevalence estimates among PWID in the region; 44 from Eastern Europe and Central Asia 6 49–88 and 21 from Central Europe 89–109 and two that contained data from both regions. 40 110 …”

“…Condom use with FSWs has been reported among male IDUs in other settings, with most analysis assessing consistent condom use or condom use in the last six months with FSWs. [31][32][33] The low numbers of either reported consistent or recent condom use precluded similar analysis, but indicates substantial need for education on sexual risk reduction.…”

“…There are few published reports of condom use rates among IDUs or even within the general population of Russia, and even less is known about these rates among partner types (e.g., new, main, casual partners). However, there is some evidence that condom use rates are generally low, with 45% of injectors in one study reporting no condom use in the previous 6 months [ 59 ], another study noting consistent condom use for only 44% of a sample of Moscow youths [ 60 ], and 19–25% of respondents in a representative probability sample of Russian households reporting condom use at their last sexual encounter [ 61 ]. Elsewhere in the world the rates of unprotected sex for IDUs ranged from 28 to 77% [ 62 – 68 ].…”
