Correlates of depression, anxiety, self-esteem, and suicidal ideas in COVID-associated mucormycosis patients and the effects of treatment

Downsizing due to COVID-19 (COV-DS) and its consequences on laid-off employees has attracted the attention of many researchers, around the globe. However, the underlying mechanisms that explain the effects of COVID-19 downsizing (COV-DS) on the employees who have survived cutoffs remain underexplored. Grounded in the conservation of resources theory, this manuscript aims to study the causal path through which COV-DS reduces the survivors’ affective commitment. The current study proposes the mediation of survivors’ job uncertainty, stress, and organizational identification between COV-DS and survivors’ affective commitment. This study also posits the moderating role of transformational leadership between COV-DS and both the mediators. The extant study has employed WARPED partial least square WARP PLS 7 and Hayes Process Macro to test the hypothesized relationships. Using the sample of 274 employees from the private sector of Pakistan, it was found that job uncertainty’s stress strongly mediates the relationship between COV-DS and survivors’ affective commitment. While mediation of survivors’ organizational identification was not proven to be significant. However, with the moderation of transformational leadership, both the mediators were proven to be significant.

Background: The second wave of SARS-COV2 pandemic in India has witnessed a massive increase in the number of mucormycosis cases. The present study is aimed at evaluating the risk factors associated with the development of mucormycosis. The case-control study involved Methods: patients admitted to the general medicine and ENT wards of a tertiary care government hospital in India between 1st June and 31st July 2021. During the study period, 70 cases of mucormycosis were compared with 140 biologically-matched controls. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were carried out to evaluate the association of the following parameters with the development of mucormycosis: demographic factors, severe acute respiratory illness (SARI)/COVID-19, RT-PCR swab status, comorbidities, CT severity grading, and use of steroids, antibiotics, antivirals, anticoagulants, immunomodulators, and oxygen therapy. The st Results: udy involved a total of 210 subjects (70 cases and 140 controls). The ndings of univariate analysis demonstrated that SARI, high-dose steroid use (cumulative dose of dexamethasone ≥40 mg for 5 days), diabetes mellitus, usage of remdesivir, CT severity grade more than moderate were associated with statistically signicant odds for developing mucormycosis. Multivariate analysis showed individual association of SARI, diabetes mellitus and high-dose steroid with the development of mucormycosis. SARI, diabetes mellitus, and high-dose corticosteroids Conclusion: are found to be risk factors in developing mucormycosis, which requires immediate medical attention in this current pandemic.

Background/ Objective: Coronavirus disease (COVID) 2019-associated mucormycosis is an aggressive fungal infection with an unpredictable outcome and poor prognosis, including a permanent vision loss. It could potentially trigger and amplify mental health problems, and the social support has been known to buffer the negative impact of such a large-scale stressor on mental health. Therefore, the present study aimed to estimate the prevalence and severity of depression, anxiety, and stress with the level of perceived social support and correlation between them in patients with COVID-associated mucormycosis. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional, observational study conducted on 100 patients of mucormycosis at a tertiary care hospital, and the patients were enrolled by a convenience sampling method on the basis of inclusion and exclusion criteria. Depression, anxiety, and Stress Scale-21 items, and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support with a self-constructed semi-structured pro-forma were used to collect the required data. Results: The prevalence of depression, anxiety, and stress was found to be 49%, 80%, and 56%, respectively. 8.0% perceived low, 65.0% perceived medium, and 27.0% perceived a high social support. No correlation between depression, anxiety, and stress with the perceived social support was found. Conclusions: Our study highlights the burden of psychological issues in mucormycosis patients. Psychiatric implications can be of paramount importance while dealing with pandemics, and therefore, a routine mental health assessment and timely psychological and social interventions can reduce the adverse impact on mental health outcomes.
