“…Polytobacco use (PTU) is increasingly common among US adults,1 2 particularly those aged 18–24 years 3–5. Data from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health study indicate PTU prevalence of 21.7% among participants aged 18–24 years, compared with 3.6% of those aged 12–17 years and 15.8% of those aged 24–34 years 3. Another study of adults aged 18–34 years tracked tobacco use over three waves in 2011–2012.…”

“…Although studies on the patterns of polytobacco use have increased, most of these studies used cumbersome combination models that limited the ability to characterize patterns of co-occurring use (25)(26)(27). Our purpose is to determine the patterns of polytobacco use among U.S. Black adolescents.…”

“…This research suggests the need to examine the unique effects of polytobacco use on Black Americans, given the excess morbidity and mortality associated with use. Tobacco use in any form is unsafe (41); therefore, there has been increased public health concerns about use of multiple tobacco products, also referred to as polytobacco use, among U.S. adolescents (25,26). The harmful effects of tobacco use may be heightened when marijuana is also used (42,43).…”

“…With the current surge in availability of a variety of tobacco products, we have also seen an expansion of the marketing for these products that may be contributing to the use of multiple tobacco products, or polytobacco use among young adults 19 38. Recent studies indicate that polytobacco use is becoming increasingly popular among young adults15 39 40 and that young adults are likely to concurrently use cigarettes with emerging tobacco products (eg, ENDS, cigar products and hookah) 40 41. Although the polytobacco use phenomenon is understudied,42 it is known that youth and young adults who use multiple tobacco products may be more susceptible to tobacco advertising compared with non-users or exclusive cigarette users 15.…”
