Correlating polymer structure, dynamics, and function with atomic force microscopy

Abstract: Since its development, atomic force microscopy (AFM) has become an indispensable tool for investigating fundamental and technological applications of polymer materials. The versatility of AFM imaging modes and operating conditions allows for nanoscale characterization of a range of dynamic processes, such as crystallization, phase separation, self assembly, and electronic transport. Advances in AFM technology, particularly high-speed and highresolution imaging, enable investigation of polymer structure, functi… Show more

“…This outcome indicates that under the action of the tensile force field generated by the head with an expansion angle of 30 , the molecular chains of PPESK and PES undergo orientation, modifying the morphology of the two phases. 39,40 This result is consistent with those of polarization FTIR tests, confirming the orientation enhancement of high-viscosity amorphous polymers by the proposed head with an expanded extrusion structure.…”

“…[63] Atomic force microscopy enables real-time observation of the sequential buildup. [64][65][66] Figure 4a illustrates the AFM image of a crosshatched lamella crystallized at 153 oC. Figure 4 (b demonstrates the AFM phase image of the interface between the nucleating agent and edge-on lamellae crystallized at 130 °C.…”

“…However, with improvements in time resolution of roughly 2 orders of magnitude, the advent of high-speed AFM has provided new opportunities for following BCP pattern dynamics in real space and time. 27 Since its development, high-speed AFM has empowered direct observations of many dynamic phenomena in BCP systems, including domain fluctuations, 28 pattern formation and alignment, 29,30 and terrace nucleation. 31 Here, we apply high-speed AFM to track fluctuations and defect dynamics in confined BCP cylinders during in situ thermal annealing.…”
