Correlation analysis of microstructure evolution on microhardness and residual stress for cutting Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy

Abstract: Microstructural variation of material directly affects the macroscopic and microscopic mechanical properties of the machined surface. This research investigates the correlation between microstructure evolution and the variation of microhardness and residual stress for cutting Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy. Firstly, a 2D customized finite element (FE) model has been performed to predict dynamic recrystallization (DRX) and resultant grain size by implementing modified Johnson-Cook(J-C) constitutive model and Johnson-… Show more

“…The residual stress formation in the subsurface layers of such difficult-to-machine materials as duplex steel and titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V as a result of the cutting process was studied by dos Santos and colleagues [29] and Rangasamy et al [30]. A considerable amount of research on the mechanical characteristics of surface layers machined by cutting is devoted to the analysis of the machined material microstructure and the cutting process conditions' influence on it, as found in [31]. At the same time, the microstructure of the machined material was evaluated based on microhardness distribution.…”

“…Similar studies were carried out by Haddag et al [27], using the analysis of the microhardness distribution of subsurface layers to estimate the microstructure of these layers. Wang and colleagues related the microstructure of subsurface layers to their micro-hardness and residual stress distribution in these layers [28]. A significant part of studies on the drilling process of titanium alloys is devoted to the dependence evaluation of the roughness geometric parameters of drilled holes on the cutting process conditions, particularly the drill feed and cutting speed [29,30].…”

“…According to the research in recent years, most investigations regarding machining-induced metallurgical behavior under different cutting parameters are mainly focused on titanium alloys, 7,2022 nickel-based superalloys, 8,2325 and aluminum alloys. 26,27 Furthermore, the microstructure evolution mechanism within the surface layer under different cutting conditions is particularly highlighted in the literature mentioned above.…”
