Correlation between Inflammatory Systemic Biomarkers and Surgical Trauma in Elderly Patients with Hip Fractures

Abstract: The treatment for hip fractures consists of a wide variety of orthopedic implants ranging from prosthesis to intramedullary nails. The purpose of this study is to determine the correlation between blood-count-derived biomarkers such as the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), the monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR) and the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) and the level of aggression sustained by elderly patients during these surgical procedures. A total of 129 pa… Show more

“…As a marker of cellular immune inflammation, SII amalgamates neutrophils, platelets, and lymphocytes, offering an objective reflection of systemic inflammation. In contrast to conventional blood-derived biomarkers such as the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), SII can more accurately depict the inflammatory and immune status of patients, rendering it a more reliable predictor [ 35 38 ].…”

“…In patients with a poor prognosis and high-mortality risk, especially those with systemic and cancer diseases, new predictive ratios have been used in recent years. One of the most important of these is the SII based on systemic immune inflammation [ 21 , 22 ] and the PNI based on the relationship between nutrition and immunity. [ 23 25 ] However, Wang et al [ 21 ] reported that the predictive value of mortality after a hip fracture for SII was low.…”

“…[ 23 25 ] However, Wang et al [ 21 ] reported that the predictive value of mortality after a hip fracture for SII was low. In another study, Moldovan et al [ 22 ] reported that the SII parameter is related to surgical trauma and may be responsible for mortality after a hip fracture. Ren et al [ 23 ] reported that the PNI parameter has a significant predictive value for the 1-year mortality rate among patients who have undergone hip fracture surgery.…”

“…Leukocytosis, lymphopenia, and neutrophilia develop in return for surgery. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) are extensively used in many branches of medicine as prompt markers of immune replay to different noninfectious stimuli [11,12]. Recently, it has been proved that regional anaesthesia reduces stress response expressed by NLR and PLR [13][14][15].…”
