Correlation between mean platelet volume and B-type natriuretic peptide concentration in emergency patients with heart failure

Abstract: BackgroundIn heart failure patients, mean platelet volume (MPV) may reflect increased platelet activation or increased numbers of large, hyper-aggregable platelets. B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) concentration in blood is a sensitive and specific marker of heart failure, correlating with the severity and prognosis of illness, in patients presenting with acute dyspnea to the emergency department. This study evaluated the correlation between BNP concentration and MPV.Material and methodsData were collected fro… Show more

“…NLR has been recently studied as a potential biomarker to determine inflammation in cardiac and noncardiac disorders including coronary artery disease, gastrointestinal diseases, and malignancies [18][19][20]. NLR elevation has also been associated with poor prognosis in acute coronary syndromes and stable coronary heart diseases [21,22].…”

“…Numerous papers have documented prognostic value of mean platelet volume (MPV) in cardiovascular pathology [1][2][3][4][5][6][7], including published research on correlation between MPV and periodontal disease (PDe) in coronary patients [8]. A thorough search on correlation between MPV and exacerbated heart failure revealed only 2 publications in this area [9,10]. MPV has not yet been studied in patients with congestive heart failure (CHF), including those with coexistent PDe.…”

“…Some of these parameters have been accepted as additional markers in diagnosing various clinical conditions [1][2][3][4][5]. They are cost effective and easier to perform in a routine setting than tests for some other markers.…”
